HIGHBALL EXPRESS HEADER

Our namesake speaks of a true story, one of an aviation maverick that nearly made it. During Prohibition it is well documented that a new type of tourism emerged that delivered the thirsty into the embrace of tropical sunshine, of decadent cocktails – of the Caribbean.

Travel became regular from Key West to the Caribbean destinations.

Cruise ships even offered direct travel from New York to the Islands, but for ultimate luxury and convenience one need look no further than the flying boats of the era. In 1922, some 2 years after the Aeromarine company was founded by Inglis Moore Uppercu as Americas first civilian airline, it commenced the first flying boat service from their Hudson River terminal to Havana.

The Service was a two day trip nick-named the “Highball Express”, taking ‘Dry’ Americans to the ‘Wet Islands’. The inaugural flight took place on the 22nd September in the model 75 seaplane called the ‘Santa Maria’ and was a 19hr USD250 flight covering 1521 miles.

These flying limousines where decked out with wicker armchairs and mahogany veneers, and carried their 11 passengers and 3 crew in ultimate 1920’s style from New York via Atlantic City, Beaufort, South Carolina, Miami and Key West en-route to the Islands.
