By 1733, only the decade after it had been founded by Kane McKenzie Haig, the Stirlingshire-based distillery became Scotland’s largest and the world’s first commercial distillery. The family also went on to establish the predecessor of the Jameson distillery in Bow Street, Dublin. Nowadays the home of Haig is known as the Cameronbridge distillery and is recognised for making grain whisky. Haig’s Dimple (known as the Pinch in the US market) is a more expensive blend with a high malt proportion, with malt whisky from Glenkinchie and Linkwood. Plazewski inherited his passion for whisky from his grandfather, who also distilled his own spirits. The company’s first casks were laid down on the 26th May 2016, and three years later they released their first single malt in September 2019. This became the first whisky to be distilled and bottled in London for over a century. The distillery carries a “farm-to-bottle” approach by sourcing 100% of its barley from a single producer and using traditional floor maltings and slow fermentation techniques. Distillation takes place via a 1,000-litre wash still and a 600-litre spirit still that were both crafted by Hoga of Spain. He was hired as a distillery executive at Yamazaki on the outskirts of Kyoto. He later left the company to found his own. Auchentoshan distillery is noteworthy for being one of the few buildings not damaged during the Clydebank Blitz of 1941. Unfortunately one of its warehouses wasn’t so lucky, and the picturesque pond just outside the distillery is actually a bomb crater. It remains the only distillery in Scotland doing 100% triple distillation and one of the very few where all the production is bottled as single malt. Glasgow-based Tennant’s were owners from 1960 to 1969 when they offloaded it to a publican, Eadie Cairns. The upgraded distillery was then sold to Stanley P Morrison in 1984.
