Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old Circa 2000’s | 2226!

Islay’s remote north east coast might seem a strange place to find a substantial Victorian distillery, but it was chosen in 1881 by William Robertson in partnership with Greenlees Bros. as the perfect spot for his island vision.

Constructing it meant not only building the distillery but houses as well, putting in a road, and adding on a pier so that casks and barley could come in, and whisky go out.

Everything about Bunnahabhain is large, from the huge courtyard to the stills. It is these with their low fill levels and massive amount of available copper which help to craft what has always been a light style of malt.

Ageing has traditionally been in ex-Sherry casks which adds a sumptuous sweet richness to the spirit.

Although peat levels had dropped to virtually nothing from the 1960s onwards, Bunna’ did start life smokier than it is now. These days, around 20% of production is heavily peated, destined for a variety of bottlings, the main one being Toiteach.

There is now a new distillery shop and bar with stunning views over to the Isle of Jura.

We estimate this was bottled circa 2000’s.

Now Dalmore, under the stewardship of Richard Paterson, (Whyte & Mackay) presents itself as a luxury brand, with some of its bottlings among the most expensive in the world.

Dufftown Glenlivet 10 Year Old 1980s | 2231!

Dufftown was built in 1896, becoming part of the Arthur Bell & Sons portfolio in 1933. As with Blair Athol, Dufftown was regularly bottled as a single malt, despite its importance to the Bell's blends.

When the company was bought by Guinness in 1985 (becoming Diageo two years later), these bottlings stopped, but a Dufftown distillery bottling returned in the 1990s as part of the Flora & Fauna series, later becoming part of The Singleton stable. Prior to the construction of Roseisle,

Dufftown was Diageo's largest distillery.

This is a 10 year old from the end of the Arthur Bell & Sons era.

Glen Garioch 12 Year Old 1990s | 2238!

Glen Garioch is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. For most of the 20th century it was self-sufficient, malting its own barley using peat from Pitsligo, giving it a unique smoky character.

In fact, in 1968 it was short-listed by then-owners DCL, to convert to heavily peated production in order to make up for a shortfall on Islay caused by a drought.

In an odd twist of fate, the decision was instead made to re-open Brora for the job, and close Glen Garioch down.

Morrison Bowmore then spring to its rescue, restarting production in 1973. The maltings and distillery were closed down again by Beam Suntory in 1995, and only the latter resumed operations two years later, with contemporary Glen Garioch becoming an un-peated single malt.

These pre-1995 vintages are worth investigating while you can.

This is a 1990s distillery bottling of the core-range 12 year old expression, produced using the old-style single malt.

Bowmore 10 Year Old Aston Martin Edition #4 1L + 10 Instant Wins | 2243!

Surely there are few locations more evocative than the shores of Lochindaal, an area positively steeped in rich Scottish folklore. It’s no wonder then that Bowmore has a whiff of magic about it (or perhaps that’s just the whisky).

The oldest distillery on Islay, Bowmore still retains its own floor maltings; and while they can no longer meet all of the busy distillery’s requirements, they still contribute a third of the malt used in every mash.

Just because something is old, doesn’t mean it’s old-fashioned, and Bowmore’s eco-friendly heat recovery system not only cuts down on those pesky bills, it also heats the town swimming pool!

This fourth edition Bowmore has been bottled in conjunction with car manufacturer Aston Martin and whilst it may be a relatively young dram it should not be underestimated! The intensity of the dram comes as little surprise as it matches the design and the elusiveness associated with Aston Martin.

Suntory Royal Zodiac Decanter / Year of the Horse 1990 + 10 Instant Wins | 2249!

Suntory are one of the founding fathers of Japanese whisky, established by Shinjirō Torii in 1899 as a wine store in Osaka. The venture was hugely successful, and the company was renamed Kotobukiya in 1921, which built its first distillery three years later, Yamazaki.

The distillery produced both malt and grain whiskies which the company blended together, releasing its first Suntory White Label in 1929, the resulting popularity of which saw the firm renamed after it 1963.

Expansion in the next decade saw the company move its grain production to a new Chita distillery in 1972, and open a second malt distillery,

Hakushu, the following year. Suntory today has a large stake in both the bourbon and Scotch whisky industry, but remains at the forefront of its native whisky market too.

This decanter is from Suntory's Zodiac Collection, a series of annual releases of their most popular blended whiskies, each presented in an ornate ceramic decanter depicting an animal from the Zodiac calendar.

Launched in the early 1980s, the series has gained popularity amongst collectors for its extensive and diverse range of designs.

This was released for the year 1990, to celebrate the Zodiac Year of the Horse.
