The distillery produced both malt and grain whiskies which the company blended together, releasing its first Suntory White Label in 1929, the resulting popularity of which saw the firm renamed after it 1963. Expansion in the next decade saw the company move its grain production to a new Chita distillery in 1972, and open a second malt distillery, Hakushu, the following year. Suntory today has a large stake in both the bourbon and Scotch whisky industry, but remains at the forefront of its native whisky market too. This decanter is from Suntory's Zodiac Collection, a series of annual releases of their most popular blended whiskies, each presented in an ornate ceramic decanter depicting an animal from the Zodiac calendar. Launched in the early 1980s, the series has gained popularity amongst collectors for its extensive and diverse range of designs. They sold it to Eadie Cairns at the end of the decade, who upgraded the site and began officially bottling it as a single malt. The distillery passed through the hands of Morrison Bowmore before becoming part of the Beam Suntory table today. Unusually, none of the Auchentoshan output is reserved for blends, meaning there has been a wealth of distillery bottled single casks and independent releases throughout the years. Wolfburn distillery is the most northerly on the Scottish mainland, located in the town of Thurso. The original Wolfburn distillery was built in 1821 by William Smith, and was operational for around 30 years before closing. The current Wolfburn distillery was built as close to the site of the original as possible, just 350 metres from its ruins. Distilling began there in January 2013. This is their fourth small batch release, and has been matured four years in first-fill ex-bourbon barrels and finished 6 months in fresh port hogsheads. The company placed its focus on the domestic market, and commanded 35% of it by the 1970s, with Bell's Extra Special the best-selling brand in Scotland. The firm was bought over by Guinness in 1985, who in turn procured DCL the following year. Today Bell's blends are still produced by its modern iteration, Diageo. Necessitated primarily by a need to capitalise on a much-expanded export market, the move also saw a change in the whiskey behind the brand names, favouring blended Irish whiskies over the traditional single pot still style. Irish Distillers pushed Jameson as the face of the company, but its historic Bow Street home had no column still to produce grain, meaning this component had to be produced at Power's John's Lane distillery. In order to streamline its operations, the company shut both distilleries down, building a bespoke new facility next-door to its Old Midleton distillery in Cork, which was shut down as well. It is currently the second best seller in the Inver House stable. In 1930 production ceased at Pulteney, due to the introduction of prohibition in Wick in an attempt to curb drunkenness. The town remained ‘dry’ until 1947, and four years later Pulteney distillery re-opened. The distillery has won many accolades over the years. Pulteney distillery is equipped with a single pair of very individual stills, with condensing taking place in a pair of stainless steel worm tubs. Both stills boast large boil balls, and the wash still has a unique, truncated, flat-topped appearance. The distillery's relationship with blenders, Robertson & Baxter, saw it acquired by Highland Distillers in 1937, who were subsequently bought by Edrington in 1999, who run it today. The modern Highland Park single malt brand was first officially bottled in the 1970s, with the release of an 8 year old age statement, but distillery bottlings first appeared around the 1950s. The look of the brand has changed many times over the years, but its cult following and popularity has never diminished. It remains one of the most recognisable single malts in the world to this day. Released in 2019, Valfather formed the final part of the Highland Park Viking Legend trilogy, a collaboration with Danish designer, Jim Lyngvild. Valfather followed Valkyrie and Valknut and was matured exclusively in refill casks. Suntory are one of the founding fathers of Japanese whisky, established by Shinjirō Torii in 1899 as a wine store in Osaka. The venture was hugely successful, and the company was renamed Kotobukiya in 1921, which built its first distillery three years later, Yamazaki.
Famed for its exclusive use of triple distillation, Auchentoshan is based on the outskirts of Glasgow and was owned for the duration of the 1960s by Tennents brewery.
The history of Arthur Bell & Sons dates back to the mid-19th century, but it was not until the 1930s that they became a big name player in the Scotch industry, acquiring the Blair Athol and Dufftown distilleries from P. Mackenzie & Co in 1932, and Inchgower from Moray Town Council four years later.
The Pulteney distillery was founded in 1826 by James Henderson in the historic Caithness fishing port of Wick and has changed hands many times over the years.
Glenfiddich was founded in Dufftown by William Grant, who had honed his craft at Mortlach distillery; and on Christmas Day 1887 the first spirit ran from the stills. 
Highland Park was built by David Robertson all the way back in 1798.
