By 1733, only the decade after it had been founded by Kane McKenzie Haig, the Stirlingshire-based distillery became Scotland’s largest and the world’s first commercial distillery. The family also went on to establish the predecessor of the Jameson distillery in Bow Street, Dublin. Nowadays the home of Haig is known as the Cameronbridge distillery and is recognised for making grain whisky. Haig’s Dimple (known as the Pinch in the US market) is a more expensive blend with a high malt proportion, with malt whisky from Glenkinchie and Linkwood. Perhaps the first blended Scotch to be built on a bedrock of Laphroaig, Islay Mist was the forerunner of the modern big, peaty blends. Distiller Ian Hunter felt the Laphroaig single malt whisky might prove too potent for the laird’s southern guests, and put together some vatted malts using Laphroaig and a couple of famous Speyside malts. At the warehouse tasting before the final choice was made, Morrison picked on one and said: ‘That will put them all in a bit of a fog Ian,’ to which Hunter replied: ‘Not a fog… more like an Islay mist!’ Eventually a blend was created by Laphroaig owner D. Johnston & Company, and registered as Islay Mist with a label incorporating the Great Seal of Islay. It was immensely popular on Islay and was the ‘go to’ blend for many Ileachs who preferred it to the island’s single malts. Wolfburn distillery is the most northerly on the Scottish mainland, located in the town of Thurso. The original Wolfburn distillery was built in 1821 by William Smith, and was operational for around 30 years before closing. The distillery was officially founded in 1816 (although illicit production on the site most certainly predates that), and produces malt with a signature style of earthy smoke and savoury undertones. 1962 marked a significant point in the distillery’s history, as it was then bought by John Logan Mackie, whose nephew Peter went on to create the White Horse blend with Lagavulin at its heart. These days the distillery, along with White Horse, belong to Diageo. However, it is generally agreed that while Lagavulin’s core range remains reliably excellent, older expressions bearing the White Horse name still have the edge. To accompany the final series of the epic HBO drama, Diageo helped ease the tension by releasing a range of eight bottlings - one for each season of the show - from eight different distilleries across the Scottish regions each representing a Game of Thrones House and adorned with the respective crest; supposedly with some connection between the dynasty and the distillery. The Macallan Double Cask Gold is matured in a combination of American Oak and refill Sherry casks. The nose has delicate sweet notes of vanilla and fresh cirtus fruits. Here they harnessed the water that flowed through the land utilizing a water wheel to power the entire distillery. DIAGEO and HBO released these limited-edition collection of single malt scotch whiskies inspired by the show. The power of water flows through both House Tully and The Singleton Glendullan Select as it is made on the banks of the River Fiddich in the wooded hills of Dufftown Orange and clove open on the nose but on the palate there’s red berry compote and vanilla cheesecake with a pronounced cereal spice finish Naturally, it’s best served chilled or over ice. The Wolfburn distillery teamed up with Carnegie Whisky Cellars to create this limited edition bottling, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the First World War's end. It's a lightly peated single malt, featuring a small portion of the whisky drawn from sherry casks, and has been bottled at 46% ABV. Both Wolfburn and Carnegie Whisky Cellars agreed to donate £5 for each bottle sold to Poppyscotland as part of the 1918 Poppy Pledge. A release of 1,918 bottles.

Robert Haig was distilling as long ago as the early 17th century - making them the oldest Scotch whisky distillers in the world - but his great-grandson was the one to commercialise the family tipple.
Islay Mist was originally created in 1927 at Laphroaig distillery by Ian Hunter, to celebrate the coming of age of the laird of Islay’s son, John Granville Morrison.
Speyside distillery began distilling in 1990, and while its single malt spirit was also eventually bottled as Glentromie and Spey whisky in later years, its first release was named Drumguish after the surrounding area and a lost distillery that sat across the way in the late 19th century.
