The original distillery had two stills and was largely demolished and rebuilt next door in the 1970s. It’s weathered over 100 years of production in its various guises. Predominantly used for blends, there are only a handful of single malt releases, including this one. The island lies only 60 miles from Glasgow, (as the crow flies), yet can take rather a long time to reach. It consists of one road, one pub, one distillery and one shop and is often described as remote. In fact, while writing the classic “1984”, George Orwell described the island as “The most un-getable place”. Originally built in 1810 the distillery fell into disrepair and wasn’t revived until the 1960’s by two local estate owners. The purchase of the land was finalised in May 2012 and the first ground was broken on the new site just a few months later. The new Wolfburn distillery building is just a short walk along the burn from the old site towards the sea. The Flow Country covers much of Caithness and has done so since the end of the last ice age. It is an ancient and almost unique environment, the largest expanse of blanket peat bog in Europe, perhaps the entire world. Today Wolfburn’s distillers fashion their whisky the same way it was always made, by hand, using only the finest ingredients, and without haste. Although its core range has always been a non-peated whisky, some occasional limited releases of peated single malt have also been produced. On October 19, 2015, Arran Distillery released the Arran The Bothy Quarter Cask Batch 1. Here is what they say about the release: The Bothy is a limited edition of the Arran Malt which pays homage to the use of small casks which would have played a large part in the Arran whisky trade in the 18th & 19th centuries. Limited Edition of 12,000 Bottles Worldwide. Given the text above I assumed a 'bothy' would have been a type of small cask (quarter cask size), but a google search quickly revealed that a 'bothy' was indeed a basic shelter, usually left unlocked and available for anyone to use free of charge. Despite being unlucky enough to suffer two catastrophic fires (in 1879 and 1898), Aberlour has enjoyed stable production throughout most of its life, and under the current regime its popularity has exploded. This is especially true in France where it has overtaken Glenfiddich as the biggest selling single malt. This roaring success could be attributed to the delicate berry-flavour spirit that runs from its swan-necked stills, or to the enormous popularity of its heavily sherried A’bunadh batch releases. Perhaps even the fact that the Distillery Manager used to serenade the slumbering casks with the soothing tones of the bagpipes. By 1970 Bell’s was Scotland’s leading blended Scotch, and in 1978 it became the best-selling blended Scotch in the UK, having seen sales grow in value by some 800% between 1970 and 1979, though it did briefly lose its number one status to The Famous Grouse in 1980. Remarkably, by that year Bell’s could boast around 35% of the market share for standard blended Scotch in Britain. One major change to the actual Bell’s blend took place in 1994, when an 8-year-old age statement was added. This was a time when there was a surplus of mature Scotch whisky, so the move to give a perception of additional quality and kudos was understandable. Accounts of the distillery’s genesis vary, and the truth is probably lost to the mists of time, but it is thought that a local farmer named David Robertson founded what we now know as Highland Park distillery in 1798, on the site of an illicit still operated by nefarious smuggler (and former priest) Magnus Eunson. Since its introduction as a single malt in the late 1970’s, the distillery has been awarded many plaudits, not least of which came from the late, great whisky writer Michael Jackson, who called it “the greatest all rounder in the world of whisky”. It’s characteristic style coming from the use of Sherry casks, along with an often cited heathery sweetness imparted to the spirit by way of the distinct Orcadian peat used during the malting process. Glendullan was the last of the seven original distilleries to be built in Dufftown (the total is now nine, although there are a number of silent distilleries in that number).
