Glenlivet has given its name to the ‘longest valley in Scotland’, so called after several distilleries laid claim to the Glenlivet suffix to cash in on the distillery’s sterling reputation. But only one can call itself The Glenlivet. It took several generations of the founding Smith family to form the distillery into the huge brand it was to become with Captain Bill Smith Grant taking over the reins after returning from fighting in the First World War. When prohibition was repealed in the USA in 1933, Bill Smith Grant was able to capitalise on the great reputation they had built in the States in earlier years. Glenlivet remains hugely popular both across the pond and at home to this day. Ardbeg Smoketrails Manzanilla Edition 1 Litre You would not think it to see it now, but Ardbeg had a difficult time of it for much of the 20th century. The distillery was bought in a joint venture between Hiram Walker and DCL in 1959, both intending to supply their blends. The subsequent years were very successful, but DCL backed out in 1979 (closing many of their other distilleries a few years later), and Hiram Walker then struggled in the 1980s era oversupply when interest in blended Scotch was waning. They closed it down for the majority of the decade. It re-opened briefly in the 1990s before being revived for good by Glenmorangie plc in 1997. Despite being unlucky enough to suffer two catastrophic fires (in 1879 and 1898), Aberlour has enjoyed stable production throughout most of its life, and under the current regime its popularity has exploded. This is especially true in France where it has overtaken Glenfiddich as the biggest selling single malt. This roaring success could be attributed to the delicate berry-flavour spirit that runs from its swan-necked stills, or to the enormous popularity of its heavily sherried A’bunadh batch releases. The subsequent years have seen the distillery’s popularity swell, with fans enticed by the signature style of tarry, sooty smoke, balanced against citric sweetness and an oily mouthfeel. While Ardbeg still retains its distinctive personality, it has definitely been influenced by Glenmorangie’s propensity for experimenting with cask finishing, and (dare we say it) NAS expressions. Feis 2021 Release: Scorch After the disappointment of 2020’s cancelled Whisky festival, hopes were sky high for Feis 2021. Unfortunately, COVID had it’s own plans, and the festivities had to be shelved for another year. Ardbeg came through, and lifted their heads above the parapet. Releasing the bottle they had prepared for the Feis, and thankfully we got a tasty dram to console ourselves with. An old black ceramic decanter of Ballantine's 17-year-old dating most likely from the 1980s or very early 1990s when the remarkable (some might say inexplicable) trend for bottling whisky in pottery was at its peak. This 75cl ceramic jug was one of several of these two-handled decanters that were bottled in different colours predominantly for export markets. The whisky itself was bottled at 43% and would have been distilled most likely in the late 1960s or early to mid 1970s.
