Glenfarclas has created a Trilogy. "The Legend of Speyside" combines with Passion, Springs and Team as a nod to old family tradition, absolute purity of water and historical practices of Glenfarclas distillery. The Oloroso casks that give this trilogy its distinctive aroma are produced in the Spanish Cooperage Jose & Miguel Martin. 6,000 of each expression were produced. Glenfarclas is considered by many to be one of the finest distilleries in Speyside. Its direct-fired stills produce a heavy single malt that is almost exclusively matured in Jerez sherry casks. The distillery focuses on single malt over blends, and a cool microclimate around the distillery that means that their casks are particularly stingy to the "angels," resulting in an incredible depth of stock. Glenfarclas also feel they share some credit for the modern day love of cask strength whisky, introducing their acclaimed 105 proof expressions back in 1968. Still in family hands since it was founded, the Glenfarclas Distillery is one of Speyside's independent whisky producers. The Grant family have been running Glenfarclas since 1860, producing an individual Speyside malt that many whisky enthusiasts number as one of their favourites. The water source is melt water from the slopes of Ben Rinnes which runs through granite and heather before reaching Glenfarclas(meaning 'the valley of green grass'). Springbank is one of only two distilleries in Scotland to perform every step in the whisky making process, from malting the barley to bottling the spirit, on same premises: the other is Kilchoman Distillery who also grow their own barley. Glenmorangie were quick out the gates to advertise and promote their Single Malt to a global audience as early as the 1960s. While this undoubtedly played a part in the rather sizeable market share they enjoy today, some credit has to be given to the whisky itself. Their famous stills stand as tall as a fully grown adult giraffe, and as well as giving them ultimate Top Trumps bragging rights, this has the benefit of producing a smoother and more delicate spirit. A new £140 million subterranean distillery and visitor centre on the Easter Elchies estate was opened to the public in the summer of 2018 and has since won several awards for its architectural quality; with its exciting features including glass walls of vintage whiskies, a circular pod of copper pot stills, and a Boutique reflecting those in Dubai and Heathrow airports. Fine Oak 10 Year Old First introduced in 2004, the Fine Oak range was a milestone for Macallan, as it was the first expression released by the distillery that was not solely matured in Sherry casks. The range was met with an initial scepticism from Macallan fans, but over the years it has won over many doubters.

It is somewhat satisfying then that it failed to make much of an impression during these early years, going through a long period of turmoil before finding its way into the hands of John Walker and DCL in 1930. This proved a real turning point though, and in 1967 it was decided that a larger, more modern distillery was needed to keep up with demand. This newer distillery is the one we associate today with the name Clynelish; the original being renamed Brora (after the neighbouring town) in 1969 to avoid confusion. Perhaps surprisingly, due to the high regard with which its signature “waxy” style is held amongst whisky fans, Clynelish doesn’t have much in the way of a core range beyond its 14-year-old; with most of its presence as a single malt down to current owner Diageo’s annual releases, or releases by independent bottlers. Instead it is most often found in blends and it provides the heart of Johnnie Walker’s Gold Label Reserve. The subsequent years have seen the distillery’s popularity swell, with fans enticed by the signature style of tarry, sooty smoke, balanced against citric sweetness and an oily mouthfeel. In the 1990s it was short-listed for Diageo's Classic Malts series, but the company eventually opted for Cragganmore instead, later opting to maintain the 12 year old Flora & Fauna as the only permanent official bottling. Independent releases are more common however. Gordon & MacPhail were granted a license by DCL to officially bottle Linkwood single malt in the 1970s and 1980s. Since its establishment in 1815, The Ardbeg distillery has been on a tumultuous rollercoaster ride of ownership changes, closures, and reopening. Stability was only achieved relatively recently, when the ailing distillery was purchased in 1997 by industry giants, Glenmorangie.
Linkwood single malt has always been considered a key component of many popular blends, such as Johnnie Walker and White Horse, with much of its output reserved for these as a result.
