The Glenmorangie Astar + 10 Instant Wins | 2080!

One of the most recognisable names in Scotch whisky, Glenmorangie were quick out the gates to advertise and promote their Single Malt to a global audience as early as the 1960s.

While this undoubtedly played a part in the rather sizeable market share they enjoy today, some credit has to be given to the whisky itself.

Their famous stills stand as tall as a fully grown adult giraffe, and as well as giving them ultimate Top Trumps bragging rights, this has the benefit of producing a smoother and more delicate spirit.

Pioneers of cask finishes, the distillery has never shied away from experimentation, and under the guiding hand of Maestro Dr Bill Lumsden they continue to release a variety of expressions to keep “The Sixteen Men of Tain” rushed off their feet.

Astar is essentially the second incarnation of the much-loved Artisan cask expression.

Glenfarclas 2008 Marriage Of Casks 2023 Autumn/Winter | 2081!

One of the oldest distilleries within Speyside, and still in family hands since it was founded, the Glenfarclas Distillery is one of Speyside’s independent whisky producers.

The Grant family has been running Glenfarclas since 1860, producing an individual Speyside malt that many whisky enthusiasts number as one of their favourites.

With its Direct-fired Stills, and melt water from the slopes of Ben Rinnes which runs through granite and heather before reaching Glenfarclas (meaning ‘the valley of green grass’).

Glenfarclas is one of the last remaining distilleries with direct-fired stills. With a long history of bottlings stretching back to the early 20th Century, both proprietary and independent bottlings are very much sought-after.

The Bowmore 10 Year Old Aston Martin Edition #4 1L + 10 Instant Wins | 2086!

Surely there are few locations more evocative than the shores of Lochindaal, an area positively steeped in rich Scottish folklore. It’s no wonder then that Bowmore has a whiff of magic about it (or perhaps that’s just the whisky).

The oldest distillery on Islay, Bowmore still retains its own floor maltings; and while they can no longer meet all of the busy distillery’s requirements, they still contribute a third of the malt used in every mash.

Just because something is old, doesn’t mean it’s old-fashioned, and Bowmore’s eco-friendly heat recovery system not only cuts down on those pesky bills, it also heats the town swimming pool!

This fourth edition Bowmore has been bottled in conjunction with car manufacturer Aston Martin and whilst it may be a relatively young dram it should not be underestimated!

The intensity of the dram comes as little surprise as it matches the design and the elusiveness associated with Aston Martin.

Lagavulin 11 Year Old Offerman Charred Oak Cask Edition + 10 Instant Wins | 2092!

Like most Islay malts, Lagavulin is definitely not for the faint hearted.

The distillery was officially founded in 1816 (although illicit production on the site most certainly predates that), and produces malt with a signature style of earthy smoke and savoury undertones.

1962 marked a significant point in the distillery’s history, as it was then bought by John Logan Mackie, whose nephew Peter went on to create the White Horse blend with Lagavulin at its heart.

These days the distillery, along with White Horse, belong to Diageo. However, it is generally agreed that while Lagavulin’s core range remains reliably excellent, older expressions bearing the White Horse name still have the edge.

This 2022 release featuring the hugely talented actor, writer and wood enthusiast Nick Offerman has been aged in heavily charred ex-bourbon and ex-red wine casks creating the perfect whisky to accompany any medium-rare steak!

Highland Park Orkney Rowing Club | 2093!

Highland Park remains the most northerly whisky distillery in Scotland, although not by much, as it is little more than a stone’s throw from fellow Orcadian, Scapa.

Accounts of the distillery’s genesis vary, and the truth is probably lost to the mists of time, but it is thought that a local farmer named David Robertson founded what we now know as Highland Park distillery in 1798, on the site of an illicit still operated by nefarious smuggler (and former priest) Magnus Eunson.

Since its introduction as a single malt in the late 1970’s, the distillery has been awarded many plaudits, not least of which came from the late, great whisky writer Michael Jackson, who called it “the greatest all rounder in the world of whisky”.

It’s characteristic style coming from the use of Sherry casks, along with an often cited heathery sweetness imparted to the spirit by way of the distinct Orcadian peat used during the malting process.

Bottled as part of the Orkney Legacy Series.

Suntory Royal Year Of The Rabbit Decanter + 10 Instant Wins | 2098!

One of the Japanese whisky giants, Kotobukiya, or as we know them today; Suntory. The company was founded by Shinjiro Torii in 1899, first as an importer of Western wines and liquor.

As he progressed within the business, he decided to build Japan’s first distillery despite protests from company directors. This is where Masataka Taketsuru comes into the picture.

He was hired as a distillery executive at Yamazaki on the outskirts of Kyoto.

He later left the company to found his own. Suntory developed Japan’s interest with whisky by opening Torys bars throughout the country and introducing ways to drink and enjoy the spirit.

Now they produce numerous ranges including Yamazaki, Hibiki, and Hakushu.

Glenturret 16 Year Old Fly’s 16 Masters Edition | 2099!

Founded in 1775, equally revered and debated over, the legend of Glenturret still pervades as arguably the oldest working distillery in Scotland.

Utilising the crystal waters of the Turret Burn in the Perthshire countryside for their malt production, Glenturret launched it’s notorious, 5 star visitor attraction, The Famous Grouse Experience in the year 2002.

The Crieff distillery produces traditionally and lovingly made, small batch malts, very rarely using independent bottlers and sticking to classic 12 year and now 10 year malts.

Here’s some amusing trivia about the distillery; they had an internationally renowned, resident mouser, who achieved recognition in the Guinness Book of Records for an eyebrow raising 28,899 confirmed kills on mice during her reign there.

Between 1963 and 1987, Towser the cat was their very own grain-prowling security guard.

A bronze statue commemorated her duties after her long 24 year post, as well as a celebratory cask of her own whisky, ‘The Towser Cask’.
