The charmingly named Wee Mongrel Batch 3 is here! Little Brown Dog gives the moniker to its blended spirits, and this beautifully aged 21-year-old Scotch lives up the substantial hype surrounding its predecessors. While we don’t know a huge amount about the release, it has spent its long years in both Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. The label artwork is by local creator Katie Watson. In 2012 a private consortium gained approval from the Caithness planning authorities to build a new Wolfburn distillery in Henderson Park, Thurso. The new distillery is situated approximately 350 m from the site of the old one and draws its water from the Wolf Burn (stream), whence it gets its name. The reinvented Wolfburn site consists of four buildings: the distillery itself and three warehouses for the laying down of casks. Local fabricators Forsyths were contracted to install the distillery plant and equipment. Wolfburn is the most northerly whisky distillery on the Scottish mainland and produces single malt Scotch whisky. Production commenced in early 2013. In February 2016 the new Wolfburn distillery commenced bottling operations, in a purpose-built on-site bottling facility. The inaugural whisky was launched globally in March 2016 and has gone on to win three gold medal awards in consecutive international competitions. Founded Haig & Haig in 1888 as an export business, focusing on selling the company’s whiskies in the US. Their efforts leading up to Prohibition boosted Dimple’s popularity in the US. By 1939, Haig had become the top-selling Scotch in the UK, thanks to the success of Dimple and Gold Label brand extensions. Dimple Pinch had also regained its pre-Prohibition sales in the States. A collectors piece for fans of the brand. In honour of 125 years of whisky production, Glenfiddich released this limited edition single malt Scotch whisky in 2012. For this expression, the chaps at Glenfiddich have used a combination of peated and unpeated whiskies aged in a large proportion of Spanish ex-Sherry butts, as well as American ex-bourbon casks. It was presented alongside a copper stopper, a leaflet giving some background on the release and a handsome presentation case. This was a limited edition Glenfiddich created by Brian Kinsman in 2012 to reflect 125 years of pioneering spirit at the distillery. The whisky was crafted to the style of Glenfiddich in William Grant's day, and is a marriage of peated whiskies matured mainly in American oak casks. Glenfiddich was an early advocate of the single malt Scotch category, and their faith is rewarded today by being one of the best-selling Scotch brands in the world. The distillery was built by William Grant in 1886, distilling its first spirit on Christmas day the following year. Today it is still part of the family-owned, William Grant & Sons. They became the first distillery to actively market their single malt brand in 1963, and were the first to open their facility to visitors.
