Royal Lochnagar 16 Year Old Special Releases + 10 Instant Wins | 2504!

This 16-year-old Royal Lochnagar single malt has been matured in both American oak and European oak refill casks, before being bottled as part of Diageo's 2021 Special Releases. Aromas of orange zest, green apple, puff pastry, white grapes, mossy earth and spicy oak fill the nose.

The palate offers notes of barley sugar sweeties, tart green apples, dry oak, white pepper and warming spices that linger in the finish.

A refined example of Royal Lochnagar, somewhat shy on the nose yet full of character in the mouth. Easy to enjoy, especially as an apéritif.

On the palate, this is a lithe, vital Royal Lochnagar with all the nimble freshness of spring and sunshine in its really appealing texture and taste.

Tasting Notes
Nose
The very mellow and rounded nose swirls with subtle aromas. The top notes are lightly fruity, suggesting orange zest and green apple. They are encased after a while, in a hint of puff-pastry, all resting on a mossy and lightly woody base. Adding a splash of water adds to the fruit, now firm white grapes, and brings up the spiciness.

Body
Medium.

Palate
A creamy texture smoothly rolls across the palate, the lively taste barley-sugar sweet and intense from the start with luscious fruity acidity mid-palate, and a developing oaky dryness. A little water makes the creamy texture and sweetness smoother still, as an appetising spicy warmth builds.

Finish
Welcoming and warming, like the first rays of the sun after a long winter, with lingering white pepper in the lightly wood-spiced aftertaste.

Kilkerran 2005 Work In Progress #2 | 2506!

Kilkerran - Work In Progress No.2Kilkerran is the name that was chosen for the single malt produced at Mitchell’s Glengyle Distillery, there are two reasons for this. Firstly, because the name Glengyle is already used for a blended Highland malt and Mitchell’s Glengyle Ltd were not able to purchase the rights to use that name.

They also wished to avoid any possible confusion between the newest single malt to come from the Campbeltown region and a pre-existing blended Highland malt.

Secondly, and more importantly, Mitchell’s Glengyle Ltd are very proud to be continuing and adding to the great Campbeltown Distilling tradition and the choice of name reflects that.

Kilkerran is derived from the Gaelic ‘Ceann Loch Cille Chiarain’ which is the name of the original settlement where Saint Kerran had his religious cell and where Campbeltown now stands.

Kilkerran is thought to be a suitable name for a new Campbeltown malt since it was unusual for the old Campbeltown distilleries to be called after a Glen, a custom more usually associated with the Speyside region.

A Kilkerran scotch whisky distilled at the Glengyle Distillery before maturing in oak casks. This is the Work in Progress 2nd release - the range follows the the progress of the distillery on the road to bottling their first 12 year old. Bottled in 2010.

Lakes The Whiskymaker's Editions Bal Masque + 10 Instant Wins | 2512!

The Lakes Distillery have in recent years released single malt whiskies in two series : “The Editions and The “Whiskymaker’s Reserve” series is the heart and core of the whisky production at the distillery with a heavy sherry influence, whilst the “Editions” have been released to demonstrate the capability of the distillery to explore the artistic nature of the whisky making and blending process.

Complex and aromatic, Bal Masque bears the mystery and seduction of a masquerade ball in its depths. Flavours and aromas mingle like masked revellers with featherlight touches, coquettish flourishes and always the promise of more. Of being transported to unchartered territories beyond expectations. The beauty of Bal Masque derives from the mercurial, not the obvious.

With guile, wisdom, wit and panache, our whiskymaker has conducted enigmatic French oak casks to create a seductive, mysterious character. Forbidden orchard fruits abound and entwine on the tongue with sweet sensory spices, raisins, vanilla and nutmeg, with subtle background notes of toasted almonds and incense.

To create a sense of intrigue and seduction, with Bal Masque The Lakes used only French oak to mature the whisky. Working with French oak for primary maturation can be tricky in comparison to using American and Spanish oak, but the results can be quite fascinating.

When used exclusively, the abundance of tannins and wood extractives can create a beautifully seductive and mysterious character.

Exceptional diversions from The Lakes sherry-led house style, The Whiskymaker’s Editions are special-edition single malt whiskies which showcase whiskymaker Dhavall Gandhi’s sense of adventure in cask selection, maturation, and blending.

Each unique bottling is an expression of creative freedom, the product of a playground where instinct, experience and inspiration roam free, coming together to realise one intrinsic objective; the creation of outstanding flavours.

The Lakes practises holistic whisky making, with the whiskymaker at the helm throughout the journey through the distillery and beyond.

His single-minded focus at every stage provides continuity of character; their assurance that every flavour possibility is achieved.

That idea of distilling being distinct individual elements is not how a whiskymaker looks at the art. Rather it is part of a continuum, a net of possibilities where everything in interlinked. Change one element and the effect will change everything else. Only by understanding how flavours are created throughout the journey through the distillery will the whiskymaker fully comprehend the possibilities. That is why at The Lakes, unusually, their whiskymaker Dhavall Gandhi is actively involved at every stage. It is holistic whisky making.

Only 5,388 bottles of The Lakes Whiskymaker’s Edition Bal Masque were released.

Lossit Blended Malt Batch #2 The Lost Distillery Company | 2513!

The Lost Distillery Company was created to attempt the re-creation of the flavour and style of historical distilleries that have not existed for almost a century in order to show respect for the ancestors of the whisky world.

The process begins with an archiving team led by Professor Michael Moss at the University of Glasgow who identify the characteristics of the ten key components they look for in long lost whiskies.

Those components include: era, locality, water, barley, yeast, peat, mash tun, wash back, still, and wood. They can then create a blend of single malts from different distilleries to create a spirit resembling the one described in the archives.
