As he progressed within the business, he decided to build Japan’s first distillery despite protests from company directors. This is where Masataka Taketsuru comes into the picture. He was hired as a distillery executive at Yamazaki on the outskirts of Kyoto. He later left the company to found his own. That all changed in 1995 when the Arran distillery at Lochranza started production. Although it is a relative youngster, Arran’s investment in quality casks has paid dividends, and its popularity continues to soar like the Golden Eagles that nest nearby. The subsequent years have seen the distillery’s popularity swell, with fans enticed by the signature style of tarry, sooty smoke, balanced against citric sweetness and an oily mouthfeel. While Ardbeg still retains its distinctive personality, it has definitely been influenced by Glenmorangie’s propensity for experimenting with cask finishing, and (dare we say it) NAS expressions. Feis 2021 Release: Scorch After the disappointment of 2020’s cancelled Whisky festival, hopes were sky high for Feis 2021. Unfortunately, COVID had it’s own plans, and the festivities had to be shelved for another year. Ardbeg came through, and lifted their heads above the parapet. Releasing the bottle they had prepared for the Feis, and thankfully we got a tasty dram to console ourselves with. While this undoubtedly played a part in the rather sizeable market share they enjoy today, some credit has to be given to the whisky itself. Their famous stills stand as tall as a fully grown adult giraffe, and as well as giving them ultimate Top Trumps bragging rights, this has the benefit of producing a smoother and more delicate spirit. Pioneers of cask finishes, the distillery has never shied away from experimentation, and under the guiding hand of Maestro Dr Bill Lumsden they continue to release a variety of expressions to keep “The Sixteen Men of Tain” rushed off their feet. Since its establishment in 1815, The Ardbeg distillery has been on a tumultuous rollercoaster ride of ownership changes, closures, and reopening. Stability was only achieved relatively recently, when the ailing distillery was purchased in 1997 by industry giants, Glenmorangie.
