Stability was only achieved relatively recently, when the ailing distillery was purchased in 1997 by industry giants, Glenmorangie. The subsequent years have seen the distillery’s popularity swell, with fans enticed by the signature style of tarry, sooty smoke, balanced against citric sweetness and an oily mouthfeel. While Ardbeg still retains its distinctive personality, it has definitely been influenced by Glenmorangie’s propensity for experimenting with cask finishing, and (dare we say it) NAS expressions. Grooves Feis Ile 2018: This groovy release was created to tie in with the retro, summer of love theme for 2018’s Ardbeg Day. To create this unusual expression, Ardbeg took red wine casks and heavily charred them in such a way that created grooves in the wood. It consists of one road, one pub, one distillery and one shop and is often described as remote. After he expanded his syndicate the Society was purchased by Glenmorangie PLC in 2004. In 2015, the Society was sold back to private investors. In June 2021, the private owners floated the holding company The Artisanal Spirits Company plc on the Alternative Investment Market of the London Stock Exchange. It has a unique code system where the first number refers to the distillery and the second refers to the cask from which the bottle comes. Since its establishment in 1815, The Ardbeg distillery has been on a tumultuous rollercoaster ride of ownership changes, closures, and reopening.
The first distillery to take out a licence after the Excise Act of 1823, the distillery was a favourite of King George IV who demanded nothing but Glenlivet during a visit to Edinburgh in 1821 - three years before it was legal!
The Nikka whisky company was founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, with the creation of his Yoichi distillery on the island of Hokkaido.

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society was founded in Edinburgh in 1983 by Phillip ‘Pip’ Hills who, while travelling around Scotland in the 1970s, fell in love with whiskies drawn straight from the cask.
For a period, Campbeltown was the undisputed Whisky Capital of World, boasting over 30 distilleries operating simultaneously at its peak. Locally available peat, barley and coal, coupled with a quick steamship service to Glasgow meant this thriving industry lasted into the early 20th Century.
Having been in specialist and craft Scotch Whisky production for generations, Douglas Laing originally exported blends, but now carries the family name down the line by focusing on bottling exceptional single malts and grains as part of their Old Particular, Provenance and XOP ranges.
