Originally a mill as the name suggests, it was converted into a distillery in 1891 and since then has lived a fairly uneventful life going about the business of distilling for blends. The distillery was officially founded in 1816 (although illicit production on the site most certainly predates that), and produces malt with a signature style of earthy smoke and savoury undertones. 1962 marked a significant point in the distillery’s history, as it was then bought by John Logan Mackie, whose nephew Peter went on to create the White Horse blend with Lagavulin at its heart. The current reception room at the distillery is also the last remaining part of the long lost Malt Mill distillery. These days the distillery, along with White Horse, belong to Diageo. However, it is generally agreed that while Lagavulin’s core range remains reliably excellent, older expressions bearing the White Horse name still have the edge. Integral to J&B, Strathmill is rarely bottled as a single malt and this has been the case for most of its life. In fact the first bottling of Strathmill as a single malt was over 100 years after its birth and was a 12 Year Old for the Flora & Fauna series.

The first of the Seven Stills of Dufftown, Mortlach was established in 1823 by James Findlater. After a string of varous owners, the distillery’s situation did not improve until railway surveyor and engineer George Cowie structured production and distribution.
Launched in 1997, this ‘finished’ range from Diageo sees the Classic Malts enhanced in carefully chosen wine casks. These limited release bottlings are a wonderful alternative view of some of the world’s best-loved whiskies.
Situated in the Firth of Clyde, the island of Arran was once a hotbed of illicit distillation and smuggling. Eventually though the dreaded Excise men got the best of Arran's renegade stillmen, and the island was without a working distillery from 1837. That all changed in 1995 when the Arran distillery at Lochranza started production.
Glenfiddich was founded in Dufftown by William Grant, who had honed his craft at Mortlach distillery; and on Christmas Day 1887 the first spirit ran from the stills. Thanks to Grant’s tenacity and stubborn self belief, the distillery flourished during a period of turbulence in the industry, and has grown to become one of the best selling brands of single malt whisky in the world, only occasionally trading the number one spot with fellow Speyside behemoth, Glenlivet.
