The oldest operational distillery on the isle of Islay, built in 1779. Today it is part of the Suntory Group, having been acquired by the Japanese company in 1994. Under their ownership is has been nurtured into one of the most collectable names in Scotch whisky. Islay’s oldest working distillery, Bowmore was established in 1779 and is now regarded as one of the most popular malts not only on Islay, but in the whole of Scotland. The distillery was acquired by Stanley P. Morrison in 1963, ushering in an era of iconic single malts, and is today part of the Suntory Group after the Japanese company acquired a majority ownership in 1994. The distillery produces a medium-peated single malt whisky and is one of the few remaining Scottish distilleries to use its own floor maltings, providing them with 40% of their requirements. Isle of Harris Distillers is a Scottish distilling company founded in 2007 by Anderson Bakewell, who was concerned by the dwindling population of the Isle of Harris in Scotland's Outer Hebrides. Bakewell believed a distillery was an ideal long-term employment solution and the company embarked on a long period of fundraising, with Bakewell joined by former Glenmorangie marketing director, Simon Erlanger, in 2012. The Isle of Harris distillery was opened in 2015, and its popular eponymous gin brand was launched in October that year. The company's single malt brand, The Hearach, then followed in September 2023. The Balvenie DoubleWood 12 Year Old is a truly unique and exemplary malt whisky crafted with skill, ambition, and expertise. Launched in 1993 using a process designed by Malt Master David Stewart in 1982, now known commonly known as 'wood finishing', The Balvenie DoubleWood whisky spends at least 12 years in traditional whisky casks. Just 5,000 bottles of Ness of Brodgar’s Legacy were produced in 2018 with a percentage of proceeds donated to the charity that oversees the 5,000-year-old Neolithic World Heritage Site for which this expression is named.
