 | Old Pulteney Navigator | 1831!
It is currently the second best seller in the Inver House stable. In 1930 production ceased at Pulteney, due to the introduction of prohibition in Wick in an attempt to curb drunkenness. The town remained ‘dry’ until 1947, and four years later Pulteney distillery re-opened. The distillery has won many accolades over the years. Pulteney distillery is equipped with a single pair of very individual stills, with condensing taking place in a pair of stainless steel worm tubs. Both stills boast large boil balls, and the wash still has a unique, truncated, flat-topped appearance. This whisky was released at the start of the Clipper Round the World Race and Old Pulteney sponsored one of the 12 spectacular super yachts in the 2013/14 Clipper Race fleet. It consists of one road, one pub, one distillery and one shop and is often described as remote. In fact, while writing the classic "1984", George Orwell described the island as "The most un-getable place". Originally built in 1810 the distillery fell into disrepair and wasn't revived until the 1960's by two local estate owners. To make The Balvenie DoubleWood, David Stewart MBE takes whisky that has spent at least 12 years in traditional whisky casks, American Oak ex-bourbon barrels and hogsheads, and moves it to Spanish oak ex-Oloroso sherry casks for an additional nine months. The whisky is then transferred to large oak vessels called “tuns” for 3-4 months to allow the whiskies from individual casks to “marry”. The Balvenie DoubleWood single malt whisky gains its distinctive character from being matured in two different wood types. Each stage lends different qualities to the resulting single malt whisky.
