Bunnahabhain is a distillery situated on the north coast of Islay. The distillery was founded in 1881, and today it produces a variety of whisky styles. Bunnahabhain is best known for its unpeated whiskies, which are light and fruity in style. The distillery also produces peated whiskies, which are more robust and smoky in character. Regardless of style, all of Bunnahabhain’s whiskies are renowned for their smoothness and balance.

Deriving from the Gaelic for ‘mouth of the river’, Bunnahabhain was founded in 1881 by William Robertson and brothers James and William Greenless. A very smooth, easy-drinking Islay malt, Bunnahabhain (pronounced ‘BOO-na-HAven’) closed and reopened twice during the twentieth century and eventually production was limited to a mere few weeks annually following Edrington’s 1999 acquisition of previous owners Highland Distillers.

In 2003, Edrington sold Bunnahabhain to Burn Stewart Distilleries for £10 million. Included in this deal was the popular blend Black Bottle, whose contents feature a quantity of spirit from every distillery on Islay.

Today, Bunnahabhain production stands at 2.5million litres a year. Of this, 21,000 casks are kept at the distillery for maturation and the resultant whisky will be used for the Black Bottle blend and for bottling as Bunnahabhain single malt. The rest of the outturn is sent for maturation elsewhere.

In relative solitude, Bunnahabhain is the Northern-most Islay distillery. It sits in a large bay to the North East of the isle, drawing its water from the Margadale Spring.

1997 was the year Bunnahabhain started experimenting with peated spirit again after a hiatus of almost 35 years. It would not become a permanent part of production until 2003 meaning some of this 1997 stock is now quite rare to see, especially bottled by the distillery itself.

This exceptional whisky has undergone a meticulous maturation process within the confines of a singular pedro ximenez cask until its bottling in January 2020. This patient ageing has bestowed upon it a remarkable array of aromas that tantalise the senses.

The deep mahogany colour of this 18 year old whisky gives away the sherry cask maturation whilst the tang of salt on the tongue reminds you of our coastal location.

With warehouses positioned along the shore and a bay fed by the Sound of Islay, there is no escaping the salty sea air, especially when you’re maturing by it for 18 years.

This velvety rich dram was created to celebrate Fèis Ìle 2022, the most important festival on Islay and within the Whisky community. Meaning Araig River in Scots Gaelic, this Limited Edition has been matured in ex-Bourbon and Pedro Ximenez octave casks, hand-selected to push the boundaries of sherry maturation. The result is a classic Bunnahabhain dram – bold, unpeated and sherried with a spicy cinnamon burst.

Nose: Chocolate, powdered ginger and cigar box.

Palate: a velvety rich texture , initially creamy milk chocolate then sweet raisins and dried raspberries. As the PX develops balsamic vinegar and honeyed macadamias come through.

Finish: deep and rich , with dark toffee and a final spicy burst of cinnamon.

Joining The Midnight Series of indie bottler Douglas Laing’s Old Particular range is this 18 year old single malt from Bunnahabhain. The single cask whisky was distilled in 2004 and matured in a refill butt until 2023, when 588 bottles were released, without added colour or chill filtration.
