It was founded in Muir of Ord in 1838 by Thomas MacKenzie and is today part of the extensive Diageo holdings, having been folded into the Distillers Company in 1925 through its merger with Buchanan-Dewar. Today it is one of the few distilleries in Scotland that is self-sufficient in malt and also provisions several other producers in the Diageo group. Over the years, the distillery's single malt has been sold under various different brand names. In the late 19th century it was marketed as Glenoran, whereas John Dewar & Sons sold it as Glenordie in the 1980s. This Help for Heroes limited edition whisky has been crafted from a combination of first-fill bourbon and Oloroso sherry hogsheads. On the nose, the aroma is a subtle cross between sweet and spicy; heather honey mingling with traces of cardamom and nutmeg. It’s on the palate that this whisky really excels though, with a host of flavours bursting through. Stunning, earthy tasting blend with hints of the ocean. Very complex with a long lasting taste and a slight numbing to it. Quite exquisite. In 1953, Chivas Brothers paid tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by setting out to create the ultimate blended Scotch whisky. The first flagons adorned with the royal crest, were sealed on the day of her coronation. It was to be known as Royal Salute 21 Year Old, after the 21-gun salute of friendship and respect that has been fired to honour dignitaries, sovereigns and nations since medieval times. Royal Salute 21 Year Old is bottled in hand crafted porcelain flagons, produced by Wade porcelain, bearing a Gaelic motto which translates as 'fidelity, stability since 1801'. The sapphire glaze on the decanter symbolises the precious gem on the Imperial State Crown. Every single drop of whisky within this blend has matured for a minimum of 21 years. The Royal Salute 21 Year Old is deep amber in colour with rich, fruity aromas and the sweet fragrance of autumn flowers.
